66 Industrial Engineer the day we strive for Work Perfect I have responsibility for the operations of the productivity manage- ment department at Northside Hospital. This includes leading the planning, administration, quality management and output of pro- ductivity monitoring, stafng budgets, position management and the patient acuity system. I use my IE skills daily through critical thinking and decision-making based on data analyses and operations improve- ment projects. These skills help me to make time-sensitive decisions impacting hospital and department-level operations. Northside is an extensive network of state-of-the-art facilities stafed with skilled, caring professionals among three not-for-proft hospitals with a total of 838 licensed beds and 700,000 patients an- nually. All Northside hospitals are full-service, acute-care facilities that ofer particular expertise in maternity services, women's health, cancer care, surgery and radiology. Our customers in productivity manage- ment are leadership, physicians, nurses and staf. However, excellent patient care is always our goal. The best part of my job is the variety and complexity of the challeng- es that we face each day in healthcare and at Northside. I enjoy work- ing with diferent people and departments on a daily basis. I ultimately enjoy working to make a diference in the lives of our patients. My perfect day at work would entail collaborating with a depart- ment regarding a stafng or patient fow issue. I could conduct a data analysis and/or observations regarding the particular issue and then make and implement a recommendation to resolve the problem. To me, spending time with staf or working with leadership regarding a current issue is the most rewarding part of my job, as I am able to gain frsthand knowledge, assess the situation and provide a workable rec- ommendation. When I can help make a diference in a patient's care or help a staf member feel better about their job, that creates the "perfect day" for me. — Interview by David Brandt Joyce T.
