62 ISE Magazine | www.iise.org/ISEmagazine The institute Yongpei Guan has spent the last three years working to provide a home for ISEs who work in energy, one of the largest industrial sectors in the United States. The founding president of IISE's En- ergy Systems Division realized the need when he served as program chair at the IIE Annual Conference & Expo 2013. Guan, a professor of industrial and sys- tems engineering and director of the Computational and Stochastic Optimi- zation Lab at the University of Flori- da, said a number of volunteers, board members and IISE's Technical Opera- tions Board have supported the project. The energy sector includes industries such as petroleum, natural gas, electric power, coal, nuclear power and renew- able energy. Industrial and sys- tems engineers are involved in all aspects, including oil drill- ing and refining, gas pipeline transportation and storage, power/heat generation and transmission and gas/electricity markets. Their objective is to improve operational efficiency and system reliability through- out energy systems. Changes in business models, new design and service phi- losophies, incentives, regulation, renew- able energy and electric vehicles are just a number of areas driving rapid change in the sector. Division membership is free for all paid members of IISE. The division can help you develop your leadership skills, expand your network and participate in events.
