Part of that need has been met by the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University. Tsinghua now has undergone official accreditation review from ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Tech- nology). ABET and IISE have a strong working relationship, exemplified by the team that visited the Chinese University from Sept. 24-26. The ABET team was led by Bopaya Bidanda, chair and professor of the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Team members included Adedeji Bodunde Badiru, dean of the Graduate School of Engineer- ing and Management at the Air Force Institute of Technol- ogy, and Timothy J. Greene, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Western Michigan University. During the three-day review, ABET team members vis- ited the iCenter innovation education laboratory, digital fac- tory, simulation and optimization laboratory, logistics lab- oratory and human factors laboratory. They also met with students, alumni and faculty representations, extensively re- viewing display materials. Tsinghua's is the first industrial engineering program in China to ever receive ABET review. It was formally estab- lished in October 2001. Professor Gavriel Salvendy of Pur- due University was the founding department head.
